The 20-minute Google Business Profile audit every Hyderabad shop should run this week

Most Hyderabad businesses set up a Google listing once and never touched it again. Here is the exact checklist to fix it — no agency, no spend, one sitting.

There is a listing with your business name on Google Maps right now. Somebody is looking at it. The question is whether it is doing any work for you, or just sitting there.

Here is the pattern, and you can confirm it yourself in five minutes: open Google Maps, search your own category in your own area, and look at the profiles that come up. Most were set up once and never touched again. No recent photos, no posts, unanswered reviews, hours that have not been checked since the listing was created. That describes most of the shops on any main road in this city.

The fix is not complicated. It is a checklist. Give it twenty minutes today, twenty minutes a month after that, and you will be ahead of almost everyone on your street.

Why this is the highest-return twenty minutes in your week

A Google Business Profile is the only marketing asset you own that is free, that Google actively wants you to fill in, and that puts you in front of somebody who is already searching for exactly what you sell. Not awareness. Not brand-building. Somebody typing "printing shop near me" at 3pm with money in their pocket.

We are deliberately not quoting a percentage here. Agency case studies promising "280% more views in 45 days" circulate widely and almost none of them can be independently checked, so treating them as a benchmark just sets you up to feel like you failed. What is worth knowing is simpler and not in dispute: a profile that is complete, has recent photos, has recent reviews and gets replies will be shown more often, and to more people, than one that has been sitting untouched since the day it was created.

Measure it on your own profile instead. Note today's numbers in Google Business Profile's performance tab, do the checklist below, and compare in 45 days. That is your benchmark, and it is the only one that means anything.

Before you start

Open your profile on a laptop, not the phone. Go to business.google.com and sign in with the account that owns the listing. If you do not know which account owns it, search your business name on Maps and click "Claim this business" — Google will walk you through recovering it.

The checklist — work top to bottom

1. Category (2 minutes)

Your primary category is the single biggest ranking lever on the profile, and most businesses pick it wrong. Do not pick a broad one. If you run a bakery that mostly sells birthday cakes, "Cake shop" will beat "Bakery" for the searches that actually make you money. Add up to nine secondary categories for everything else you genuinely do.

2. Name (1 minute)

Your business name field should hold your business name. Not your name plus keywords plus your area. Google actively removes stuffed names, and a competitor can report yours in thirty seconds. Keep it clean.

3. Hours, including the special ones (3 minutes)

Set your regular hours, then set holiday hours for the next three months. Diwali, Bathukamma, Bonalu, Sankranti, Ramzan — every Hyderabad business has days it opens late or stays shut, and a customer who drives to a closed shop leaves a one-star review about it. Google also shows a "Hours might differ" warning on unmaintained profiles, which quietly costs you clicks.

4. Photos — the part everyone skips (6 minutes)

Upload ten photos today. Not stock images. Actual photos, taken on your phone, of:

  • The shopfront as it looks when someone walks up to it, so they recognise it from the road
  • The inside, lit, with the lights on
  • Three of your actual products or your actual work
  • You and your team — faces build more trust than interiors do
  • Parking, or the lane to reach you, if you are hard to find

Then set a monthly reminder to add three more. Freshness is a signal. A profile that gets new photos every month reads as a living business to Google and to the person deciding between you and the shop 400 metres away.

5. Services and products (4 minutes)

Fill in every service with a short description and a price or a price range. This is the field that feeds the answers Google gives directly on the search page, and it is empty on the overwhelming majority of local profiles. Filling it in is a genuine advantage available to you for free.

6. The description (2 minutes)

750 characters. Write it for a human being who has never heard of you. What you do, who you do it for, which areas you serve, what makes you the easy choice. Put your locality names in naturally — Kukatpally, Alwal, Gachibowli — because that is what people type.

7. Messaging and the WhatsApp bridge (2 minutes)

Turn on messaging. Then decide who actually answers it and how fast. An unanswered Google message is worse than no messaging at all — Google can disable the feature for slow responders, and the customer has already moved on.

The monthly rhythm that keeps it working

The audit above is one-time. This is the part that compounds:

EveryDo thisTime
WeekReply to every new review, good and bad10 min
WeekPost one update — an offer, a new arrival, a job you finished10 min
MonthAdd 3 new photos5 min
MonthCheck the Q&A tab and answer anything sitting there5 min
QuarterRe-check categories, services, hours, holiday dates20 min

The one thing to do before you close this page

Do not do all seven steps. Do step four. Take ten photos on your phone right now and upload them. It is the step with the least thinking and the most immediate effect, and it is the one that proves to you the rest is worth doing.

Then come back next week and do the other six.
